Characteristics of Isostatic Graphite

Isostatic Graphite has its own Characteristics. see bellow details:

  1. isotropic properties in each direction.

For Carbon graphite products molding methods, there are mainly three types, namely: hot extrusion molding, such as the production of graphite electrodes for steel industry; molded pressing (including vibration pressing) and for carbon and carbon products of aluminum; isostatic molding. The forming method is different, but the forming principle is the same. So there are mainly 3 or 4 kinds of graphite, say: extruded graphite /vibration graphite, molded graphite, isostatic graphite.

For the raw material before pressing, whether it is paste, or powder, the material particle arrangement is disorder; under pressure, the powder particles displacement and deformation, the contact surface increases due to plastic deformation, the occurrence of mechanical bite and intertwined, so that the material is compacted. You can see the carbon particles in the material, with a microscope, they are neither round, nor square. In the case of extrusion and compression, these carbon particles will be arranged in order by unidirectional pressure and mold friction, which results in differences in the final product properties such as electrical , Mechanical, thermal properties, etc. That is perpendicular to the pressure surface direction and the horizontal direction of the pressure surface performance is different, it is called “anisotropy.” This “anisotropic” is need by graphite electrode for steelmaking, carbon brushes for motor They need this feature. While in many other occasions, it doesn’t need “anisotropic”, and will need for “isotropic.” So there is isostatic Graphite. Isostatic pressing method changes the material in one direction (or both directions) pressure to the multi-directional (all) compression, carbon particles are always in a disordered state so that the final product has no or little performance differences. Direction of the performance ratio is not more than 111. It is called: “isotropic.” Of course, in order to further narrow the performance differences, in addition to the key isostatic press molding, it is still needed for some improvement for the carbon particle structure and technology.

  1. Uniformity of bulk density

For the manufacture of fine-structured, textured, and homogeneous carbon graphite materials, powder pressing (rather than paste) is the only method, while powder compaction is only method of molding and isostatic pressing. When using molded pressing, the pressure transmission will be gradually reduced, resulting in uneven density of the volume. This difference increases, with the increase height in the product, No matter it is a single-sided compression or double-sided pressure. the friction (carbon particles and products and molds) The uneven density of the whole is not only bad for the future processes – roasting hidden dangers, but also result in the finished parts when rough processing, which makes the performance of individual products different, and the difference is very harmful. With isostatic pressing method, the force is uniform for the product in all directions; the bulk density is relatively uniform, and not subject to product height restrictions.

  1. can produce large-size products.

Due to the rapid development of information industry, the diameter of monocrystalline silicon has been extended from 75-100mm to the large diameter of150- 200mm, and is developing to 250mm-300mm. The diameter of the graphite material needs to increase in accordingly. graphite used in EDM, graphite for continuous casting and graphite for nuclear reactors are also required for large-sized products, for example, graphite products of 1,500 × 2,000mm have been produced on the market today, and mould pressing way cannot be done. Subject to some restrictions
